What just happened? Remember the transparent OLED TV that LG showed off at CES in January? The 77-inch set is finally available to buy. Unsurprisingly, it costs more than the average US car price: $59,999. If you’re a millionaire who considers that amount walking-around money, buying one will not only get you floating images, but also wireless video and audio tech.
LG unveiled the Signature OLED T at CES this year. The transparent screen makes objects on the display appear as if they’re floating in space. This T Object mode is an always-on display/screen saver that can be enabled when the TV isn’t being used. LG says the mode acts like as a transparent digital canvas for showcasing artwork, videos or photos.
The TV also includes a T-Bar, an optional ticker that appears along the bottom of the screen. It shows the likes of sports results, IoT device statuses, weather forecasts, or song title information. It appears when the rest of the screen is unused, so you can still see what’s behind the set while the T-Bar is activated.
The Signature OLED T also operates as a normal OLED TV, of course. Clicking a button raises the roll-up back panel to activate the opaque mode. The 4K@120Hz set has all the usual features found on LG’s latest OLEDs, including FreeSync, G-Sync compatibility, a 0.1ms response time, an Alpha 11 Al processor, smart TV apps, and much more. It’s been reported that the picture looks similar to that of LG’s excellent C4 OLED TV, if not as bright as the premium G4 model.
Something else that you get for your $60,000 is a Zero Connect Box. This allows 4K images and sound from different inputs to be sent wirelessly to the TV, meaning fewer wires and the ability to place the TV in more locations.
The benefits of a transparent set like this include being able to place it somewhere, like in front of a window, and still see what’s behind it. Having a floating object in the field of view can even enhance the view.
The Signature OLED T comes in stand-alone, against-the-wall or wall-mount options. Customers can also add standing or floating shelves on either or both sides of the screen.
If you feel dropping $60K on a TV, the Signature OLED T is available now in the United States at select LG-authorized retailers including Best Buy, Video & Audio Center and via LG.com.
