Sir, As Richard Waters writes, Elon Musk is running out of time (“Time is a commodity Musk cannot control despite SpaceX success”, February 9). But the situation is even more dire than he says.
Tesla has revealed that the base $35,000 Model 3 has been delayed by a quoted nine months. Considering Tesla’s history of missing timelines, we most likely won’t see the truly affordable Tesla until 2019, by which time the $7,500 federal tax credit will have expired, and more electric car competition will have entered the market. I wonder how many of the roughly 500,000 Model 3 reservation-holders will be willing to give up their tax credit, and wait another year for their car. I subsequently wonder how Tesla will be able to afford all those $1,000 refunds.
