Disney+ released the official trailer for Marvel Animation‘s upcoming series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man on Sunday.
The official logline describes the show as “an animated series that follows Peter Parker on his way to becoming a hero, with a journey unlike we’ve ever seen and a style that celebrates the character’s early comic book roots.”
The trailer kicks off with the classic theme song (“Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a spider can”) that was written by Paul Francis Webster and Bob Harris for the 1967 cartoon series.
It then shows Peter (voiced by Hudson Thomas) as he wakes up, runs late for school and gets hit by a car. “Petey’s always been a bit clumsy,” as he is described.
While in class, Peter sees a crime of some sort being committed outside the window and makes an awkward exit: “Mr. Campbell, uh I remembered I left something in the bathroom. Deuces, Parker out.”
Wearing a very makeshift suit, Peter is mocked by one of the bad guys: “Check out our next victim in his dumbass costume.” Replies Peter: “Is my suit really that bad?”
Later, the trailer shows Peter in a surprising team-up with Oscorp head Norman Osborn (voiced by Colman Domingo) — aka the Green Goblin, Spider-Man’s nemesis — who tells Peter: “With my help, you’ll achieve greatness.” Osborn also gives Peter a much-improved Spidey suit. (This is a departure from the the Marvel Cinematic Universe live-action movies, where Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, plays mentor to Peter and bestows the upgraded suit upon him.)
In the trailer, Peter also reflects on the responsibility he feels: “I truly believe that I have these powers to help people, to protect them.”
The trailer ends with him returning to life as a high school student, being scolded by his teacher for being tardy. Watch it below.
The show, which already is in development on a second season, begins streaming Jan. 29 on Disney+. The voice cast also includes Eugene Byrd, Grace Song, Zeno Robinson, Hugh Dancy and Charlie Cox.
