Rarely does the name of a product, new gadget, or device turn heads. There are a lot of zany product names out there, don’t get me wrong, but they also tend to be pretty ridiculous. So, when I found out that there’s an Amazfit smartwatch named after one of the most popular dinosaurs to roam the Earth, well, let’s just say I was intrigued. The amusing part is that this particular model is the Amazfit T-Rex 3. That means there were several watches with the same name. I must have been living under a rock, maybe even a fallen meteorite. The , for example, is another variant. But we’re not here to talk about the Ultra or even the T-Rex Pro which we gave 3.5 stars in our review, we’re here to talk about the Amazfit T-Rex 3. It’s an ultra-rugged, outdoor-friendly smartwatch for athletes and those who are regularly active.

Don’t take that to mean you can’t use it if you’re not active, you absolutely can. Just know that most of the features are meant for sport and outdoor activities versus sedentary use, and for good reason. Besides being a tough, versatile smartwatch it also has GPS built-in, ideal for the modern explorer. But here’s why it’s even more impressive: You get military-grade durability, cutting-edge outdoor navigation features, and unparalleled battery life — over three weeks on a single charge. Moreover, there are 170 sport modes, with free downloadable offline maps, and enhanced privacy settings. You can even disable the GPS location sharing, which is great if you want to stay off the radar. Perhaps, best of all, is Amazfit’s fully integrated AI called Zepp Flow. And all of that is packed into this tough, attractive beefy guy — the T-Rex 3.

Quite the fierce watch

Quite the looker, especially if you’re an avid outdoors person, the T-Rex 3 looks equally resolute and modern. The 1.5-inch AMOLED display cuts a stunning figure in the center of the watch face. A 2,000-nit peak brightness rating and gorgeous visuals don’t hurt. With a screen so vibrant, it’s hard to believe that the smartwatch can last over three weeks on a single charge during typical use, but it does. That screen is also surrounded by a 316L stainless steel bezel, with physical buttons on all sides.

It’s tough, too. Like really, really tough, and meets Military-grade standards. It has a heat resistance of up to 158 degrees Fahrenheit, is water resistant up to 328 feet (100 meters), cold-resistant down to negative 22 degrees Fahrenheit, and is freediving certified up to 148 feet (45 meters). This thing can go virtually anywhere and survive.

Dual-band GPS with detailed maps allows you to find your way, while you’re exploring the great outdoors. But if you don’t want to be tracked and want your privacy, no problem, you can disable it entirely. That gives you the freedom to do as you wish, even taking advantage of offline maps of the local area as needed.

Crafted for adventure

The T-Rex 3 was basically made for great adventures. But even with its rugged and outdoor-friendly nature, it comes packed to the brim with modern features. This ain’t your grandpa’s watch. For example, you can fully control the watch with your voice, send speech-to-text message replies, manage timers and schedules, ask for wellness and personal stat updates, and much more, all with the help of Amazfit’s AI Zepp Flow. Zepp Coach, a fitness-inspired AI tool, can help generate personalized training plans and keep you training smarter.

The GPS and map integration is something you won’t find in most comparable smartwatches, either. You can download offline maps, get turn-by-turn directions, check on your location, understand the terrain topography, including peaks and troughs, and use them for various activities — like skiing or snowboarding. Here are just some of the environmental data points you can reference on the T-Rex 3: a compass, air pressure, altitude, storm alerts, altitude SpO2 reminders, sun and moon schedules, and beyond.

What about my privacy?

It’s tough to imagine a GPS and location tracking device respecting your privacy, I get it. Most companies are doing sinister things with your data these days. But Amazfit’s dedication to enhanced privacy protection is something to behold. Not only can you disable GPS tracking if you don’t want it, easily and at any time, but there are several other steps that Amazfit has taken to preserve user privacy. You can enable or disable GPS location data storage, and backup all of your data locally to your smartphone, email, a network disk, or a third-party data platform like Strava, giving you full control over where your data is stored and how it’s handled. Disabling data sharing is easily possible. Furthermore, you have total control over the apps you install on your watch — called mini apps — and you can uninstall them at any time.

Full personalization is possible, too. You can swap out the band any time, and Amazfit has a huge selection of alternatives available if you want to show off a bit of your own personality — like swapping to a band of your favorite color or style. Don’t like the silicone? No problem, swap to nylon. Prefer leather? That’s possible, as well.

So, what’s the cost? At full price, the Amazfit T-Rex 3 is $280. From November 15 to November 27 you can enjoy a 16% discount — bringing the price down to $235. It comes with a silicone band in two colors, either onyx (black) or lava (red with an orange tint). But you can always swap out bands later if you don’t like those. However, the coolest part is that you can tell everyone you have a T-Rex on your wrist. Rawr.
